What is the Role of a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv)?
Welcome to the latest Varming Consulting Engineers blog, where we examine various aspects of M & E engineering and building design in Ireland. Today, we look at the vital role of the Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) and what they do.
A Chartered Environmentalist is a title that recognises a professional’s environmental understanding, skills and knowledge in enhancing and protecting the environment in a sustainable way. The expertise these highly skilled practitioners have in this area is used to instil client trust, make strategic decisions and transition to sustainable practices.
What Does Being a CEnv Mean?
When a professional is awarded the title of CEnv, it denotes that their peers have judged them as meeting the highest standards in the environmental aspects of the work they do. Those in the role work as hands-on practitioners, using their specialist knowledge to advise governments and lead teams and departments.
In order to become a CEnv, a person must be able to demonstrate:
-
Application of knowledge of the environment to further the aims of sustainability
-
A personal commitment to professional standards, recognising obligations to society, the profession and the environment
-
Leadership in sustainable environment management
-
Effective communication & interpersonal skills
This was the subject being discussed at a panel discussion attended by Declan Alcock, Director at Varming Consulting Engineers. Held at Clyde Road in Dublin, the event saw Engineers Ireland announce itself as the first organisation outside the UK to be licensed by the Society for the Environment (SocEnv) to award the CenV title.
Speaking on the matter, Mr Alcock stated, “CEnv is a really unique role requiring a diverse knowledge base that ties together the various strands of sustainability, be they scientific, social, economic, cultural or technical.
The Chartered Environmentalist Professional Title will be influential not just in the context of project delivery and meeting the climate ambitions of the engineering and construction sectors but of great benefit to members of Engineers Ireland who wish to enhance their credentials and broaden their area of expertise”.
