The Well Building Standard V2 – looks at ‘how organisations can approach prevention and preparedness, resilience & recovery in relation to COVID-19 & other respiratory infections’

28 July 2020

The world of consulting engineers has been impacted hugely by Covid-19, as the global effect of the pandemic has pervaded all walks of life. However, being based in construction, the methods we use in building design are focusing on researching ways to be able to contribute to controlling and minimising the effect of Coronavirus.

An illustration of this can be seen in version 2 of the Well Building Standard which includes key strategies that can be used by M & E consulting engineers to prepare for and provide resilience against Covid-19 and other respiratory illnesses. From measures that help to support mental health to others that improve air quality, the standard can help in many ways.

Millions of Square Feet’s Worth of Research

The key themes of version 2 of the Well Building Standard focus on the promotion of clean contact, improving air quality and helping to support the health of building occupants. In addition to this, the guidelines featured focus on fostering mental resilience and the rights of workers to have a safe and supportive place in which to work.

Since it was launched, the Well Building Standard has been all about creating buildings that help people to be at their very best by providing an environment that helps them thrive. Building services design consultants are able to implement measures that create optimum light levels, improve air quality and provide health-supporting equipment with which to work.

As a natural consequence, some of these measures can also be used to combat Covid-19 with elements like the promotion of ‘clean contact’ and effective air filtration able to minimise transmission rates. In addition to these Covid-fighting elements, the standard is simply packed with measures that can help building users to stay healthy and be at their best.

At Varming Consulting Engineers Ireland, we are fully conversant with Well Building Standard Version 2, as well as all new and emerging sustainable construction techniques. Coronavirus hit hard, of that there is little doubt, but by focusing our efforts on creating the very best indoor spaces for commercial buildings across Ireland, we naturally introduce an improved ability to withstand pandemics like the one we are currently experiencing.
