How The Growth In Remote Work Impacts Office Building Design
Whilst remote working existed before the appearance of Covid-19, the virus has certainly led to a significantly higher number of people having to work from home. And it’s something that’s having an impact on building design – allowing employers to save money and work smarter.
Here we take a look at just a few ways in which building services design consultants and M&E consulting engineers are being asked to modify the way in which office buildings are created to take this paradigm shift into account.
Smaller Carbon Footprint
One positive aspect of the requirements of a modern workplace is that the space in question doesn’t need to cater for as many workers. The result of this is workplaces with a smaller carbon footprint, as less desks, less power, less water and less equipment is required.
Smaller Conference Rooms
Another impact of remote working is that consulting engineers and designers are being asked to create much smaller conference rooms. Rooms containing large tables that seat up to 20 people are rapidly becoming a thing of the past and are being replaced by much smaller rooms that seat up to 6 and feature a media centre for those dialling in from outside.
Hot-Desking the Norm
The days of people having designated desks are also rapidly disappearing, as more choose to work remotely. ‘Hot-desking’ means that the same can be achieved with less in the way of equipment and space and it has led to the infrastructure in offices including more in the way of collaborative workspaces for those who find themselves in the office on any given day.
Smarter, Better-Designed Office Space
At Varming Consulting Engineers, we are one of the leading mechanical and electrical engineering firms in Ireland and we are constantly striving to keep abreast with modern design practices. Here we’ve seen that remote working seems to be here to stay – long after the Covid-19 threat has passed.
