What You Should Know About the latest International BIM Standards

Building Information Modelling is an intelligent 3D model-based process used by M & E consulting engineers, architects and building designers that allows for efficient, collaborative working on a shared 3D model.

In relation to this, there was a recent publication concerning the international BIM regulations (ISO 19650), the first 2 parts of these international guidelines have been published in response to the prediction that the global construction industry is set to grow by as much as 85% over the next 10-15 years – driven by a huge increase in demand for housing and infrastructure.

ISO 19650 Part 1 & 2

The first two elements of ISO 19650 (ISO 19650-1 & ISO 19650-2) have been published and they relate to the digitization and organisation of information of data relating to civil engineering works and buildings, with the inclusion of a BIM element to allow for a framework for collaborative operation.

Bringing this to the international stage will result in simpler and more efficient collaboration on global construction projects, allowing building services design consultants, architects and mechanical and electrical engineers to work in a greener, less wasteful way.

There is a part 3 in the pipeline which will focus on the operational stage of assets, as well as a part 5 that deals with smart asset management, building security-focused BIM and digital built environments, but they are as yet, not officially published.

What is BIM? – The Future

Essentially, BIM is an information delivery process that has been shown to allow projects that employ it to save as much as 22% on labour and construction costs and it’s something that is becoming more and more widely used. The publications of these international BIM rules simply illustrates that BIM represents a large part of the future of a greener global construction industry.
