Introducing James Kavanagh – the current CEO of Varming Consulting Engineers. As a Chartered Building Services Engineer, James brings a wealth of technical expertise to his management responsibilities, with extensive experience in science, technology, healthcare, commercial and educational facilities. Fostered on trusted relationships he understands the importance of collaboration and leadership in achieving success. James maintains strong industry links and a wide professional network. He maintains continued active involvement of the Board of the ACEI having recently served as President 2023-2024. James is a Chartered membership interviewer with Engineers Ireland he also sits on the TUD Building Engineering Industrial and Academic Steering Group. Outside of work, James enjoys DIY, photography, abstract art and sculpture.

Joe Greene

Meet Joe Greene is a seasoned management professional with over 30 years in the engineering industry. He joined Varming Consulting Engineers in 1995 and became an Associate by 2000. His expertise led to his appointment as Director, overseeing projects in Healthcare, Residential, Industrial, Educational, and Commercial sectors. In 2005, Joe established our Roscommon office, delivering high-quality Building Services design to clients in the West, North-West, and Midlands. Promoted to Chairman in 2019, he now leads the company’s strategic direction. A Chartered Engineer, Joe is also a member of the Institution of Engineers of Ireland and the Association of Consulting Engineers of Ireland.

After spending 13 years working in the industry, Paul joined Varming Consulting Engineers in 2006, where he quickly proved his worth and was promoted to the management team as an Associate in 2007. With his technical expertise and leadership qualities, Paul’s contributions to the company did not go unnoticed, and he was appointed Director in 2013. As a Chartered Engineer and a member of the Institution of Engineers of Ireland, Paul understands the importance of maintaining high professional standards while delivering exceptional results. With his strong communication skills, Paul has built solid relationships with clients and has consistently delivered innovative solutions that meet their needs.

Declan joined Varming Consulting Engineers in 1993 and has since made significant contributions to the company’s growth and success. He joined the management team as an Associate in 2006 and has been responsible for the management of a diverse portfolio of projects in the healthcare, commercial, and industrial sectors. In recognition of his outstanding leadership skills, Declan was appointed Director of Varming Consulting Engineers in 2018 and now leads the Cork office. With a 1st Class Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering and a Diploma in Project Management, Declan is a highly qualified professional with a passion for excellence. As a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow Member of the Association of Consulting Engineers of Ireland, he upholds the highest professional standards in all his work.

Declan Alcock

Meet Declan Alcock who has 25 years’ experience, a decade of which is at Varming Consulting Engineers. He is a Chartered Engineer with a Master’s degree in Energy and Sustainable Building Design, a Certified Energy Auditor and holds several other qualifications in sustainability and building design. Declan is director and former Chairman of the Irish Green Building Council and a Chairman of Engineers Without Borders Ireland. Declan leads our sustainability group and pathway for Net Zero. He joined the management team as Project Director in 2014 and was appointed as a Director of Varming Consulting Engineers in 2020.

Meet Alan Nolan, Director and Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental (QHSE) Manager at Varming Consulting Engineers. Alan joined the team in 2007 and has since been responsible for managing a portfolio of projects in the Residential and Healthcare sectors. In 2017, he joined the management team as a Project Director and in 2022 he became a Director of the company. In addition to his project management roles, Alan is responsible for ensuring the highest QHSE standards across the company. With a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Building Services and a Diploma in Building Services, Alan is a Chartered Engineer.
