Explaining Ashrae 90.1

18 February 2018

At Varming Consulting Engineers, we are committed to helping the construction industry move towards a greener and sustainable future. This means that we concern ourselves with cutting edge sustainable design and efficient construction methods in every one of our projects.

There are many benchmarks in the modern construction industry, relating to what represents optimum energy efficiency in building design and today, we look at Ashrae 90.1, an American standard concerning the efficiency of the building envelope, heating, cooling, water heating, electric power distribution and energy consumption for Commercial buildings, in the United States, except low-rise residential. As it is synonymous with LEED it is increasingly being used internationally.

Superseded

In 1975, the original standard – Ashrae 90 – was published and since then, there have been numerous amendments and updated editions, resulting in the latest and current edition, Ashrae 90.1 being created in 2001. The name given to the standard is an acronym of the creators, American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers and the current edition has itself been amended a further 5 times, with the latest revision taking place in 2016.

This has been necessary, as there have been a number of new technologies that have emerged onto the market in recent years.

Setting the Industry Benchmarks

Industry bodies like Ashrae are playing a vital role in the transition of the construction industries globally to a far greener and less wasteful way of working. Only by working to an agreed sets of standards, can m&e consulting engineers and building design consultants across the world hope to achieve optimum financial and energy efficiency in the built environment.
