LV infrastructure – Why & When It’s Used in a Healthcare Setting

05 September 2022

At Varming Consulting Engineers Ltd., we’ve been involved in many healthcare-related M & E engineering projects since our founding back in the 1940s. Today we’re here to talk about Low Voltage (LV) infrastructure, detailing why and when it’s used in healthcare settings.

LV systems are extremely important in hospitals and healthcare settings, positively impacting day-to-day operations and the experience patients have. As such, these systems are regularly used in work that Varming Consulting Engineer’s design consultants are involved with.

These systems are often used in the following applications:

  • Video surveillance & CCTV systems
  • Paging & intercom systems
  • Wireless/WiFi systems
  • Mass notification systems
  • Access control systems
  • Nurse call systems
  • The Benefits of LV Electric

Most of the electrical equipment found in offices and homes runs on low voltage, and it’s something that has much to offer. To begin with, it offers lower running costs, increased safety and energy efficiency, with low direct current power being delivered via renewable energy sources such as hydro and solar.

While some equipment combines the use of low/high voltage for purposes of increased performance, there is a definite shift towards low voltage systems, particularly when talking about lighting. LV systems are also safer to work on and are known to run cooler, greatly reducing the need for cooling to be provided.

An example of when LV systems were used by the Varming team can be seen in the recently completed Merlin Park University Hospital New Orthopaedic Theatre Block.
