Clonakilty Community Hospital

Client: Health Services Executive

Project Description

Varming Consulting Engineers were commissioned to design the mechanical and electrical services installations for a 20 bed ward extension including communal areas. The 20-bed ward extension comprises 16 single rooms en-suite and a 4-bedroom extension to the existing Dementia Unit, together with associated Communal Areas and Staff Rooms.

Features

The overall energy efficiency objective for this project was to deliver a minimum A3 BER development which complies with building regulations, resulting in a NZEB compliant building development.

The design philosophy was to use sustainable options, energy efficient materials and equipment and to employ a holistic approach to the integration of the building fabric, its systems, and its users.

The approach to Energy Efficient Design used the principles of integrated design to prioritise a well-designed building envelope which responds to both climate and occupants needs. The extent and complexity of services required was rationalised, thus reducing theassociated energy and carbon implications along with capital and operating costs. Achieved by Minimise Demand through Passive Measures, Reduce Consumption and Use Renewable of Low/Zero Carbon (LZC) Technologies.

Integrating heat pump technology into the system offers a ‘cleaner’ source of heat production, improving health impacts of poor local air quality, and importantly, lessens the impact on global temperatures.

Renewable heating (2 no. air to water heat pumps & 1 no. water to water heat pump).

LED lighting with automatic lighting controls. Night lighting in bedrooms and corridors. Scene setting dimming controls in sitting rooms, dining rooms, day rooms and quiet rooms.

Addressable emergency lighting system.

IP CCTV system.

Networked access control system.

Wireless nurse call system.

Wander management system.
