The Benefits of a Employing a Passive Stack Ventilation Strategy

21 January 2019

At Varming Consulting Engineers, we regularly employ intelligent building designs in our client projects that save energy and improve performance. One example of a design often employed by our mechanical, electrical and sustainability engineers is that of Passive Stack Ventilation. Which harnesses buoyancy driven natural ventilation to improve occupant thermal comfort and significantly reduce the need for cooling energy.

This design strategy utilises optimised, software controlled ventilation openings which are activated when necessary to provide additional air movement and expel excess heat preventing thermal discomfort during the warmer hours of the day.

The Institute of Education, Dublin

The Varming building services design consultants used this ventilation technology on the 2016 project at the Institute of Education on Leeson Street in Dublin. We were commissioned by our client to design the mechanical and electrical services for their new four-floor extension, which we carried out in two separate phases.

The advantages of using a passive stack ventilation strategy are reduced energy consumption and a more comfortable working environment, making it an ideal solution for building owners looking to reduce running costs in the long term.
