The Need for Resilient Power Systems in Healthcare

01 July 2022

At Varming Consulting Engineers Ltd., we have been involved with work in a wide range of different sectors, from education to governmental projects. Our building design team has also applied their skills in healthcare settings like hospitals and medical facilities.

Today we look at the importance of robust power protection strategies, including resilient Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems. The need for this is obvious, as power loss in an operating theatre or elsewhere in a hospital can result in danger to health and human life.

So, What Is a UPS System?

In the event of a significant power outage, a UPS system (typically battery operated) kicks in to provide emergency power to reliably support medical equipment. The result is a seamless switch, meaning that no equipment is adversely affected, putting patients at risk.

What a UPS solution also does is protect what can be very delicate, expensive medical & equipment from power surges and fluctuations. This is crucial to the operation of medical establishments, as IT and imaging equipment rely on continuous power.

Keeping Everything Working – Even In a Power Cut

If power were to be lost in this kind of setting, MRI scanners, intensive care diagnostic equipment and devices used in A&E would simply stop working. What’s more, when IT networks go down, in small clinics and doctors’ surgeries, loss of life can still be caused.

An example of when the Varming team of building services design consultants used a UPS system can be seen in the 2019 University Hospital Galway – Cardiac Catheter Laboratory Replacement.
