Varming Consulting Engineers – ‘BIM around the World’ Survey
Across the construction world, BIM is technology being utilised on an ever more frequent basis during building design, construction and maintenance.
What is BIM?
The acronym ‘BIM’ is an abbreviation of ‘Building Information Modelling’, which describes the collaborative processes used to form a single coherent system of digital models, rather than the traditional paradigm of CAD drawings.
BIM Maturity
In order to assess the adoption of BIM across the globe, researchers from Australia and the UK, including Dr Bilal Succar from the Centre for Interdisciplinary Built Environment Research at the University of Newcastle in Australia and Dr Mohamad Kassem, from Teesside University’s Technology Futures Institute, have spent 3 years developing a ‘research-based’ system they created to gauge the levels of BIM being achieved across 20+ international construction markets, back in 2015.
The countries surveyed included Ireland, Russia, Singapore, Portugal, Switzerland, Qatar, New Zealand Australia, Finland, China, Brazil, Qatar, Spain, UAE and the USA.
This team of industry experts, hailing from all parts of the world have spent their time evaluating BIM diffusion and maturity, using 5 different ‘models’ of assessment, which include data on milestones and stages of the process, champions, framework for regulation, education and learning, benchmarks and technology infrastructure.
The report created is able to be used by policy makers in each of the countries in question. The Brazilian construction industry have recently used these models to create its initial draft of its ‘roadmap’ to BIM.
Methodology
Using this 5 faceted methodology, the researchers mentioned earlier were able to create an ‘all-encompassing’ survey sent to each of the countries included.
The Responses
From over a hundred experts contacted, the responses received made for promising reading for the construction industry in relation to BIM. The findings of the survey, released in mid 2016, showed that there is growing momentum throughout the global construction sphere, to achieve higher levels of BIM maturity, which is good news for everyone concerned.
